Meet Mark and Kelli Turansky
Aloha! After calling Hawaii our home for decades, we currently reside and work in Haleiwa on Oahu's North Shore and consider these islands as our home. Both of us have served on staff leadership positions in local island churches. Mark (ordained in 1984) served the local church in full time ministry for 35 years and a decade of that timeframe was as senior pastor of a church in Mililani.
However, for various reasons, we have stepped away from "organized religion" but still hold fast to our faith and belief in God. Over these past few years we have felt stuck between two realities: a sort of "low level guilt" that we have abandoned church mixed with a lack of desire to return, contrasted with a peace that God was okay with our choice. This phase has lasted, in our case, about 9 years until God began revealing an assignment for us that reflected both our heart for others as well as addressing concerns we have about the nationwide dilemma of those who have abandoned traditional church for various reasons.
Our desire is to connect with others who consider themselves on a spiritual journey, but hesitate to put a box or traditional structure to their pathway. So, we decided to create a “church” for people who aren’t religious. We plan to have life discussions within a biblical framework that is free from legalism, dogma and judgement. Why? Because many people are burned out with traditional church but are not burned out with a sense of spirituality and seeking God.
How can you be a part? Just come out and join us; be part of the future of a new kind of church. There is no membership, all are welcome. Bring your own beach chair or blanket to sit on. We don't know exactly what this will end up looking like, but are up for the adventure and would love to have you come along with us to see what can be created.
With warm aloha,
Mark and Kelli
Are you a “None?”
The number of Americans who do not identify with any religion continues to grow at a rapid pace. One-fifth of the U.S. public are religiously unaffiliated today, the highest percentages ever in Pew Research Center polling. In recent survey’s, when it comes to identifying what religion participants identify with, (i.e. Protestant, Catholic, Baptist, Episcopalian, etc. ) the box selection “none” is checked at a rate not ever seen before when taking these polls.
This large and growing group of Americans is less religious than the public at large on many conventional measures, including frequency of attendance at religious services and the degree of importance they attach to religion in their lives.
With few exceptions, though, the unaffiliated say they are not looking for a religion that would be right for them. Overwhelmingly, they think that religious organizations are too concerned with money and power, too focused on rules and too involved in politics.
The growth in the number of religiously unaffiliated Americans – sometimes called the rise of the “nones” – is largely driven by a those who choose to be unaffiliated than previous generations were at a similar stage in their lives.
Are you a “none?” If you can identify with this trend, Nonreligious Church may be for you. Our Vision is to create an emotionally safe place for people to explore their spirituality without fear of judgement, dogma or legalism. If the following statements seem to reflect where you are currently at, NRC may be something you might want to explore:
* I have chosen to believe in God, or am considering it, and want spirituality to be part of my life.
* Despite my believe in God, I have not found what I am looking for in the traditional, organized church that I grew up in, or have had previous experience with, and that is why I have stopped attending.
* I am open to the guidance of the Bible, but I dislike how people seem to use it in hurtful ways.
* Sometimes I have experienced traditional church to be irrelevant to my day to day life and desire my relationship with God to be more organic and authentic.
If you agree with any or all of these statements. Perhaps NRC could be for you!
